Kept for reference. These are the terms for a free version of the app, with no ads and no in-app purchases. The current terms are at /terms.
Draft. Under legal review before the app launches.
Effective date: 1 November 2026
These terms govern your use of the Shloka Scroll app for iPhone and Android ("the app"), published by Banupriya Sankarasubbu, an individual developer based in Singapore ("we", "us"). By using the app, you agree to these terms.
- If you got the app from the Apple App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement ("Apple EULA", https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/) also applies. If it conflicts with these terms, the Apple EULA applies to the extent it must.
- If you got the app from Google Play, the Google Play Terms of Service (https://play.google.com/about/play-terms/) govern your relationship with Google. These terms govern your relationship with us.
- Apple and Google are not responsible for the app or its content, except as their own terms say.
1. What the app is
The app presents the Bhagavad Gita verse by verse, with translations, word meanings and transliterations, as a reading and learning aid. It is not religious instruction, not an authoritative commentary, and not a substitute for a teacher, a tradition or your own study.
2. The texts and their sources
- Sanskrit text: the Bhagavad Gita is an ancient text in the public domain.
- Word segmentation and grammatical data: adapted from the Digital Corpus of Sanskrit by Oliver Hellwig, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0), https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/. We have segmented, transliterated, aligned and corrected this data. Changes are ours, and the original authors do not endorse the app.
- Translations and word meanings (English, Hindi): written by us from the Sanskrit, with AI assistance. They are in beta: review by human Sanskrit and Hindi reviewers is under way, and translations marked "Beta" in the app haven't finished review. Please suggest corrections. They are © 2026 Banupriya Sankarasubbu. All rights reserved, except where marked otherwise.
- The full list of sources is in the app under Settings → Credits, and at https://shlokascroll.com/credits.
3. Accuracy and corrections
We work hard to present the text accurately, but translation involves interpretation, and mistakes can happen. The content is provided "as is". If you find an error, please report it (Suggest a correction on any verse, or support@shlokascroll.com). We review every report and publish corrections in app updates.
Your suggestions. Suggestions are voluntary and unpaid. By sending one, you let us use it, freely and without credit or payment, to correct and improve the app's content, and you confirm it doesn't copy someone else's copyrighted translation. Our corrected text remains ours (§2). Don't include personal details in a suggestion.
4. What you may do
You may use the app for personal, non-commercial reading and study, and share individual verse cards using the app's share feature. Public-domain and CC BY material stays free for everyone to use under its own terms. These terms don't restrict that. You may not:
- copy, scrape, download or extract our original translations or word meanings, or the app's data set, in bulk, whether by hand or by automated means;
- republish, redistribute, sell or make available our translations or word meanings (for example in another app, website, data set or AI training set), beyond sharing individual verse cards as described above;
- access our content server (
api.shlokascroll.com) other than through an unmodified copy of the app, including with bots, scripts, crawlers or modified apps; - reverse-engineer, decompile or tamper with the app or its server interface, or get around its security, genuine-app checks, rate limits or download limits, except where the law expressly permits it;
- remove or alter copyright notices or the invisible marks in the text that identify copies;
- use the app or its content to mock, misrepresent or incite hatred against any religion or community;
- use the app in any unlawful way.
To enforce these rules, the content server limits downloads per device and records abuse (see the Privacy Policy). We may limit or block access from devices that break them, and we may use the invisible marks to trace published copies and request their removal.
5. Our name and design
"Shloka Scroll", the app icon and the app's design are ours. Don't use them in a way that suggests we endorse you.
6. Price
The app is free. This version has no ads and no in-app purchases. If we add optional paid features or ads in a later version, we will update these terms before that version is released, and nothing you can do today will be taken away and put behind a payment without notice.
7. Privacy
See our Privacy Policy at https://shlokascroll.com/privacy. In short, there are no accounts, no ads and no purchases. Our content server keeps only a pseudonymous device ID, short-lived download counters and abuse records with hashed IP addresses, to protect our translations. Details are in the policy.
8. Disclaimers and limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, the app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind. We are not liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the app. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot be limited by law, or any rights you have under the mandatory consumer laws of your country, including India's Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
9. Changes and ending
We may update the app or these terms. If we change the terms materially, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, tell you in the app. You can stop using the app at any time by deleting it.
10. Governing law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of Singapore. You may also have the right to bring claims in the courts of your home country under its consumer laws.
11. Contact and grievances
